There is something reassuring about knowing where an everyday object began.
La Lessive is made in Cheltenham in small batches, using Marseille soap flakes, water and our signature perfume composed in Grasse. It is a simple formula, but simplicity asks for attention. The texture, the pour, the perfume and the way each tin leaves the worktable all matter.
For LAVOIR, making less at one time is not a way of creating noise or false urgency. It is simply the scale at which the work still feels personal.
A batch is a promise
Each run of La Lessive begins with 240 tins. That number is large enough to send the product into many homes, but still small enough for me to remain close to it as the person behind the business.
I can see the batch taking shape. I can notice when something needs adjusting. I can pack each order with care, read every note that comes back, and carry what I learn into the next run.
Small-batch making does not mean that every tin is handled ceremonially or that nothing ever goes wrong. It means there is nowhere for the details to disappear. When a customer writes, I know which batch they received. When the formula, packaging or instructions can be made clearer, I can respond rather than waiting for a distant production cycle to catch up.
Why 240 tins?
LAVOIR is still a very small business. Two hundred and forty tins is a practical, human quantity: enough to make the production worthwhile, without filling a warehouse simply for the sake of looking bigger.
It also helps us avoid making more than we can thoughtfully sell. The aim is not endless stock. It is a steady rhythm — make, listen, learn, then make again.
That rhythm feels right for a product inspired by laundry itself. Washing is repetitive, but never entirely mindless. It is a quiet cycle of use and care: wear, wash, dry, fold, begin again.
A product with a memory
La Lessive began with Mamie Lou and with the women in my family whose care was often expressed through ordinary things: a clean tablecloth, linen put away properly, a familiar scent in the house.
The product is made in Britain, but its character comes from France — from Marseille soap and perfume composed in Grasse, and from the feeling of laundry drying outside on a late-summer afternoon.
Making in small batches allows that story to remain visible. LAVOIR does not need to pretend to be a large anonymous household brand. It can be what it is: one person, a careful formula, and a growing collection of homes in which the tin has found a place.
What the batch tracker means
You will now see a small tracker on the La Lessive page. It shows how many tins remain from the current batch, using our live stock count rather than a number updated by hand.
It is there for clarity, not pressure. Some people like to know whether a batch is nearing its end; others simply like seeing the scale at which something has been made. Either way, the number tells the truth about where we are.
When this batch is gone, another will follow — carrying with it everything the last one taught us.
